Sure, the public defender seems free ... but their caseload is very high (meaning they have less time) and they don't help you with the DMV hearing. Remember, the court can order you to pay for the public defender as part of your punishment, so you might as well talk to some lawyers now, before court or the 10 days is up. Because the witch hunt for DUI continues, you may as well know now, you don't want to be caught with another DUI, let alone any arrest, while the current one is happening. In fact, many courts expect you to dry out and quit drinking really - there is a belief that you have a drug problem in many person's minds. In 2005 the law changed too, and all arrests now have a 10 year look back into your record period - meaning if you have a prior offense within the last 10 years, you're gonna be subject to much worse punishment. If you pick up more arrests, always tell your current lawyer right away! Lastly know, that now you can also be charged with murder in a DUI case. If you have killed someone else in a collision and you knew what you were doing was dangerous to other humans, you can be guilty of murder. Let the Clinic check out your case before you make any big decision about how to proceed. We can tell you what to anticipate along the entire path you're about to travel. Call during our business hours for help, or fill out the form and we'll call you. Otherwise, enjoy our materials and we hope you do the right thing in your California DUI case. PS - for many reasons, you'll find out that a "wet reckless" charge is really simply a DUI charge in disguise.
