It is important to make an impression on the judge or hearing officer. You show them you've taken responsibility for your arrest by showing up to the first date with a lawyer. Remember, your lawyer should be speaking for you cause you've learned to "remain silent" !

Sure, the public defender seems free ... but their caseload is very high (meaning they have less time) and they don't help you with the DMV hearing. Remember, the court can order you to pay for the public defender as part of your punishment, so you might as well talk to some lawyers now, before court or the 10 days is up.
